Tsunesaburo HAP40 HSS Kanna

Developed by Hitachi Metals, HAP40 is a unique powdered High Speed Steel which has become very popular in high end knives. Consisting of a much finer structure than standard HSS, HAP40 is able to achieve unprecedented sharpness while maintaining the tempering resistance and durability HSS are prized for. 

Over twice as durable as Aogami (blue steel) the HAP40 kanna are the most versatile and durable plane in Tsunesaburo's range. They can be used on all types of hardwood, softwoods and even plywood. 

Unlike high carbon steel Kanna this blade can be sharpened using a grinder given the high tempering threshold of 550°C

The back of the blade is also unique as it does not have a ura (hollowed back) meaning that there is no need to do uradashi (tapping out the blade).
